sponsored visas steps

1. Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) registration

1. Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) registration

1. Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) registration

The purpose of this registration is mainly to ensure that the business is a legitimate, law-abiding business, and that it has the financial capacity to take on a sponsored employee. The process it not very difficult. Processing usually takes weeks rather than months.

Once registered, an SBS lasts for five years and can be easily extended.

2. Nominating the position and worker

1. Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) registration

1. Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS) registration

Once the business has identified a worker who they want to sponsor they will need to nominate that worker for the position. Nomination is quite complex and must be done carefully.

You need to prove that the role is genuinely needed, that the business can't find an Australian worker, and that they won't undercut the normal Australian salary.

3. Visa application

3. Visa application

The visa application is usually prepared at the same time as the nomination application. Providing suitable evidence of the skills and qualifications of the applicant is critical to this stage.

The visa applicant may also need to meet character, health, age, Engish language, and other requirements.

4. Processing time

5. After the visa is granted

3. Visa application

The time taken until a decision is reached can vary from several weeks to several months. During this time, the Department of Home Affairs may ask the applicant for further information through a formal request.

If the worker is already working with you, they will be able to continue working on a bridging visa while waiting for the decision.

5. After the visa is granted

Celebrate! One benefit of a temporary employer sponsored visa is that both the employer and the visa holder have an incentive to make the arrangement work.

If the worker has dependents of working age, for example a spouse or older children, they will also have work rights and can work in your business if you wish to employ them.

6. What next?

5. After the visa is granted

All temporary skilled visa holders now have a pathway to permanent residence (PR) and citizenship.

After two or three years, the worker will be eligible to apply for PR, if the employer wishes to nominate them.
